About the author
Chris Beman earned his Master's Degree from Norwich University and is an authority on Soviet Women Combat Pilots during World War Two. Chris is a prolific author who has used his knowledge of military history to create exciting stories of military science fiction, alternate history, techno-thrillers, and historical fiction. Chris is a resident of Saint Augustine, FL, and resides with his wife, Lareesa, formerly of Ukraine, who has served numerous times as an inspiration for many of his female characters.
Several of my academic articles include Women Combat Pilots of the USSR in WWII, The Battle of Britain, how well-coordinated defense can achieve victory over a Superior Aggressor, and " The Cultural Interpretation of Warfare, citing the 1588 battle against the Spanish Armada by Sir Frances Drake..

HISTORY'S HIGHEST SCORING FEMALE ACE
Lydia Litvyak
Lieutenant Lydia Vladimirovna Litvyak, Soviet Red Air Force (The White Rose of Stalingrad), was born in Moscow on August 18, 1921. Lydia (called Lilya by her friends) developed an early love of flying, having joined a flying club in Kherson, Ukraine. After the Nazi invasion of the USSR in June of 1941, under the direction of famed female Russian aviator Marina Raskova, three all-women’s combat regiments were organized. Lydia flew in the 586th, piloting a YAK-1 fighter. From the beginning, this slight and slender girl of 100 pounds exhibited remarkable flying skills, including some that earned her reprimands for performing dangerous aerobatics low over the airfield. She formed a strong friendship with her mechanic, Inna Pasportnikova. In September of 1942, Lydia engaged and shot down German ace Erwin Maier, who bailed out of his ME-109 and was captured by Soviet troops and then brought to Lydia Litvyak’s airbase. Once there, he asked to meet the pilot who had shot him down and was incredulous when a young, blonde woman, looking more like a schoolgirl, was brought to him. He refused to believe he had been bested by this 21-year-old girl until she described the air battle, move for move. Once he knew the truth, Maier hung his head in shame.
By then Lydia was flying with a mixed squadron (male and female) as the wingman for fighter ace Alexei Solomatin. The two became great friends and a romance bloomed between them. It was a great tragedy that in May of 1943, Solomatin was killed in a training accident right before her eyes. After Alexei’s death, Lydia disregarded all danger in battle, even against incredible odds. On August 1, 1943, while engaging four German fighters, Lydia Litvyak’s YAK-1b, adorned with the image of three white flowers, vanished in a cloud over the Donbas region of Ukraine. Remains of what are believed to be those of a woman pilot were found in the late 1970s, although never positively identified as those of Lydia Litvyak. Mikhail Gorbachev posthumously awarded her “Hero of the Soviet Union” in 1990. She is credited with 12 solo victories and 3 shared kills.
